If you’re over 40 and you’ve spent years doing ab workouts, cutting carbs, and wondering why your midsection still won’t budge — I want to tell you something that took me a long time to say out loud to clients: it was never going to work. Not because you didn’t try hard enough. Because the advice itself was wrong for your body at this life stage.
Let me explain what’s actually going on, and what I’ve built instead.
The Myth We Were All Sold
Somewhere along the way, we all absorbed the same idea: crunches burn belly fat. Do enough of them, often enough, and the fat over your abs will melt away.
It sounds logical. It’s also not how the body works.
This is called “spot reduction,” and decades of research say it simply doesn’t happen. Your body doesn’t pull fat from directly underneath the muscle you’re working. Fat loss happens across your entire body, in a pattern that’s largely determined by genetics and hormones — not by which exercise you did that day. Ab exercises build your ab muscles. They don’t touch the fat sitting on top of them.
I know how frustrating that sentence is to read if you’ve spent years doing exactly that. So let’s talk about what’s actually happening — and what does help.
Why Belly Fat Shows Up Differently After 40
If your midsection has changed shape over the last few years even though your habits haven’t, here’s what’s likely going on underneath the surface:
Your hormones are shifting. As oestrogen declines through perimenopause and menopause, fat storage tends to move from your hips and thighs toward your abdomen — including a rise in visceral fat, the metabolically active fat that sits around your organs. This is a well-documented, population-level pattern. It is not a sign you’re doing something wrong.
You’re losing muscle, and muscle matters more than you think. From around age 30, adults lose roughly 3–8% of muscle mass per decade, and that rate speeds up after menopause. Less muscle means a lower resting metabolic rate — which is a big part of why the eating and exercise habits that worked at 30 quietly stop working at 45.
Sleep and stress aren’t separate issues — they’re part of the same picture. Poor sleep and chronically elevated cortisol are both linked to increased abdominal fat storage and appetite dysregulation. If perimenopause has wrecked your sleep, that’s not just exhausting — it’s actively working against you here too.
So What Actually Works?
If spot reduction is out, here’s what the evidence actually supports for women navigating this life stage:
Resistance training, not cardio-only. Research on midlife and postmenopausal women consistently shows that resistance training preserves or builds lean muscle while supporting reductions in total and visceral fat — outcomes that cardio-only routines typically don’t match at the same time investment. Cardio still has real value for your heart and your mood. It’s just not the tool that changes your body composition on its own.
A moderate, sustainable nutrition shift — not another crash diet. A modest calorie deficit, built around enough protein to protect your muscle and enough fibre to support your gut and hormone health, beats extreme restriction every time. Very low-calorie approaches tend to backfire at this life stage: worse sleep, more cravings, and faster muscle loss.
Treating sleep and stress as training variables. Not an afterthought. Not a “self-care” bonus tip tacked onto the end of a plan. An actual, planned part of the process.
What I Built Because of All This
I got tired of watching capable, disciplined women blame themselves for a problem that was never about effort. So I built The 6-Week Midlife Belly Fat Reset — a structured programme that puts these four things at the centre instead of ab workouts and restriction:
- Progressive full-body strength training, three sessions a week
- Functional core work that builds real strength and posture — not “spot reduction” theatre
- A flexible, protein-forward nutrition framework you can actually stick to
- Practical sleep and stress guidance built into the plan, not bolted on
Six weeks won’t fix everything. But it will get you strength, energy, and momentum you can feel — and it will teach you why this approach works, so you can keep going long after the six weeks are over.
If you’ve been doing everything “right” by the old rules and still feel stuck, it’s not you. It’s the rules. Let’s use the right ones instead.
